Days can be long and hectic. Whether it’s meeting after meeting at work, or juggling life’s responsibilities, at times the mental battery gets drained. So what do you do to recharge and get the boost you need?

The answer lies within. Look to your inner resources – all you need for a boost is inside you. At the core of our being is an abundance of energy. When we tap into that, we cleanse and recharge our whole system. So how can we reach this refreshing inner reservoir? One way is by chanting mantras.

The Sanskrit word, ‘mantra,’ can be broken down into two parts: “man,” which means mind, and “tra,” which means transport or vehicle. Essentially, a mantra is a ‘tool or instrument of the mind’.

All about the Vibes

Do you remember meeting someone for the first time and being struck by their ‘good vibes’? It wasn’t anything particular they said or did – just something positive about their energy.

Vibrations aren’t easily pinned down or understood, but we all experience them to a certain degree. When someone shouts at you or insults you, don’t you feel a contraction in your system? You either cower upset into your shell, or get angry. The vibes given out make you want to get as far away as possible.

The chanting of mantras purifies the mind and intellect, and turns negative vibrations into positive ones. It drives away distractions, pacifies negative thoughts and brings the mind inward. As we tap into that inner abundance and invoke the vibrations of the mantras, our battery recharges and our personal power increases.

Choose your Mantra

First, select your mantra! Each mantra invokes a certain energy that can heal or manifest particular positive qualities in your consciousness. Here are some simple but extremely powerful mantras you can choose from. You can use the japa108 app to help you to keep a count of your mantra chanting.

Om Namah Shivaya

This mantra can be chanted for overall well being, protection and peace.

Aum, or Om, is the primordial sound of the universe, and the further syllables in this mantra each represent one of the five elements; earth (Na), water (Ma), fire (Shi), air (Va), space (Ya).

Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar explains that we can save ourselves from the ill effects of planetary movements through the zodiac by chanting Om Namah Shivaya 108 times. Astrologically, there are 9 planets moving through 12 signs, so there are 108 different effects that we may experience in our lives. Chanting Om Namah Shivaya 108 times protects us from these effects.

As Gurudev says, “If negative thoughts, insecurities, doubts come into the mind, chant Om Namah Shivaya. This itself will put you on the right track.”

Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya

This mantra is dedicated to the Lord Krishna incarnation of Lord Vishnu (the Maintainer). Known as the 12 syllable mantra, it pays homage to the divine and transports us towards our own inner divinity,

The sacred text, Bhagavatam which is centered around devotion to Lord Krishna, states that “this Mantra is enough to destroy all the many ills that visit man. Like the Sun which dispels darkness, like the breeze which scatters dense clouds which have gathered in abundance in the pure blue sky, this mantra dispels the sorrows and ignorance in the mind of man.”

Om Gam Ganapataye Namaha

This mantra salutes Ganapati, otherwise known as Lord Ganesha, who is celebrated as the remover of obstacles. If you feel stuck in life or are facing some challenges, or if you are experiencing a block in your creativity, then chant this mantra to clear your path and find clarity and creativity.

Om Namo Narayanaya

Narayana is known as the supreme God in Vedic culture, so we remember and honor him by chanting his associated mantra.

As you chant the name of the supreme in repetition, the ego diminishes.  This mantra is recognized as a tool for achieving oneness with the Divine.

Five Simple Steps to Mantra Chanting

  1. Choose a comfortable spot for your chanting. Ideally keep a clean, tidy, sacred space at home for doing your chanting and spiritual practices.
  2. Sit comfortably, either cross-legged or on a chair, with your spine straight and shoulders relaxed. Avoid chanting right after meals.
  3. Close your eyes and let your mind settle
  4. Chant your chosen mantra 11 or 108 times. If you wish you can use mala beads, or prayer beads, to help you count. If your mind wanders, accept it and bring it back to the chanting.
  5. When you have completed your chanting, continue to sit with your eyes closed for 5 to 10 minutes to connect with its effects.

In the japa108 app you can learn many more mantras, play audios to help with pronunciation, earn awards for reaching key chanting milestones, and connect with a community of fellow mantra chanters – all to help you stay motivated in your chanting journey.
