Mercury, planet of the intellect and communication, is in Mrigashira, the nakshatra spanning the signs of Taurus and Gemini, from May 16th altogether until June 16th.

This transit includes Mercury’s retrograde arc starting May 29th, which puts a longer than usual focus on Mrigashira’s themes, and emphasizes the idea of a pursuit. This asterism’s symbol is the Deer, which in Vedic myth is shown being pursued across the skies by Brahma the Creator, representing a chase driven by desire or ambition.

You are on a quest for information and enlightenment, and Mrigashira’s Shakti here, ‘To Give Fulfilment’ sees this desire having its own intrinsic appeal, which may be even more attractive than arriving at your goal. So there is a sense of pursuing your goals out of intrigue, and a curiosity for knowledge which may be insatiable – you still ask questions even after your chase is over.

Yet there is still promise of ultimate success. Mrigashira’s shy and receptive nature means you also get pursued by someone who wants to pick your brain, or perhaps open up with a secret they want to share. If you are actually travelling now, it’s worth fixing a schedule in advance to keep you on track and so you don’t lose your way.

The ruling deity here is the Moon, the fastest moving planet, which represents the emotional mind and adds to your current fickle and changeable character. You like the feeling that comes from having information and expressing yourself well, but you also react and communicate depending on your mood.

Mercury’s retrograde arc sees this transit begin in zodiacal Taurus, enter Gemini from May 26th, then reverse back into Taurus by June 3rd.  You may start with a fixed opinion, then be open to new information, before finally reverting back to your original position with an even greater fixity and determination.
