Short term transits are calculated using the movement of the faster moving planets – Mars, Venus, Mercury, the Sun and the Moon. The Moon is the fastest mover, transiting all twelve zodiac signs in about 28 days and spending about 2.5 days in each sign. Next comes the Sun which stays in one sign for a month. Mercury takes about a year to travel through all the zodiac signs, staying in each for between 14 and 30 days depending on its motion. Venus stays in a sign for between 23 days and 2 months, and Mars for about a month and a half.

The slower moving planets determine the longer term transits, and the larger cycles of our life. Whereas Jupiter stays in each sign for a year, Saturn stays around 2.5 years, as it takes 29.5 years to travel through all twelve zodiac signs. The Moon’s nodes, Rahu and Ketu, are always moving in retrograde motion, and take around a year and a half to travel through each sign.

When a planet’s transit happens in a positive sign with no malefic influence then the result is positive on the individual. If, however, there is some malefic influence then the impact is more challenging.
