Whilst some of us fall asleep as soon as our head hits the pillow, others lie in a sleepless state, mind churning over the day’s activities until the moment comes when the outer world finally dissolves and sleep takes over.

In Vedic astrology, the Moon represents the mind and emotions, determining the way you think and respond to situations. In your birth chart, the placement of the Moon tells a lot about your sleeping habits, as well as how your mind works. As we fall asleep at night the conscious mind takes rest and the subconscious mind awakens, bringing us on a cyclical journey of dreaming and deep, rejuvenative sleep.

Depending on your Vedic sign – determined by the zodiac sign the Moon was in at the moment of your birth – there tips (below) you can follow to keep your mind balanced and at peace, helping you to experience a deep, restful night’s sleep.

Moon in Aries

Courageous, quick-thinking and impulsive, you are all about getting things done. Aries is a sign of action, and is ruled by Mars, bringing an aggressive or competitive approach to achieving your life goals. Whilst this goal-oriented, driven energy is great for achieving your ambitions, it can mean that the mind is still buzzing with ideas and to-dos at bedtime.

Aries Moon’s can sleep better when they’ve been fully active through the day – not only through work but also through physical activity such as competitive sports. Then take it easy in the evening. Before sleep you can give journaling a go. The act of externalizing the inner workings of the mind through writing by hand can help you clear your mind and ease you into a state of calm for a restful night’s sleep.

Moon in Taurus

The Moon is exalted in Taurus which can have a balancing effect on the mind and emotions of those with their Moon in this sign, allowing you not to get too bothered when little things don’t go as planned. Moon in Gemini

Gemini Moons – intellectual, communicative, entrepreneurial, and possibly even a little eccentric. With a sharp mind that jumps from here to there, it is stimulating conversation and intellectual debate that will interest you and bring you solace. Tiring yourself through the day with meeting-of-mind discussions will help you to rest deeply at night.

With your interest in keeping up with the latest technologies and gadgets, don’t be tempted to stay on-screen till late. Best is to switch off the blue-light devices a couple of hours before bedtime and ease yourself into a dim light environment conducive to sleep. Balancing all that left brain activity by doing something creative can also help.

Moon in Cancer

The giving and nurturing sign of Cancer is ruled by the Moon itself, so these emotional beings can sometimes guard their feelings and their secure space as a protective mechanism to avoid getting hurt. They may experience nightmares from anxieties and worries. The Moon represents the mother and, influenced by its ruler, Cancer is a sign which likes to give and take care of others.

Doing exactly that throughout the day can stabilize your mood and help you sleep better at night. Meditation is a must for Cancer Moons as it helps to steady the emotions and calm the mind. Right before sleep you can do Yoga Nidra, a deeply relaxing guided lying-down body scan, which eases you into a deep, regenerative sleep. You can find Yoga Nidra on the Sattva Mantra and Meditations app.

Harmony is the key word when it comes to Venus-ruled Libra Moons. Fans of fairness, romance and good company, you may be inspired by the arts and anything you consider beautiful. Like your fellow Venus-ruled sign, Taurus, the environment in which you sleep is important. Best is to set up a harmonious and comfortable bedroom where you feel relaxed and at peace. You can also draw, paint or play music to uplift the atmosphere.

Libra Moons tend not to like conflict, so do your best to resolve any conflicts before hitting the pillow, and embrace an attitude of acceptance when things cannot be changed.

Moon in Scorpio

Keepers of hidden secrets, Scorpio Moons are known for their intensity of feeling and emotion. Influenced by the energy of Mars, they can be moody, impulsive and possessive at times, but benefit from a deep connection with their own intuition. Moon in Sagittarius

Freedom-seeking sign Sagittarius is ruled by Jupiter, planet of knowledge and wisdom, bringing an interest in philosophy and peacekeeping. Spending time discussing spiritual and philosophical ideas is beneficial for maintaining a stable mind. Jupiter’s expansive energy brings limitless energy, which is best spent through the day in order to sleep well at night.

Go out for an adventure, explore somewhere new, exercise and use up some of that energy, so that when night comes you can sleep like a baby.

Moon in Capricorn

Career-oriented Capricorn Moons feel deeply responsible in life. Always wanting to achieve and do more, Saturn’s rulership can bring with it fears of losing position or status. Stress can result in disturbed sleep for Capricorn Moons, who occasionally feel burdened by their sense of responsibility. For these ambitious and even workaholic natives, sleep may be seen as part of a structured, organized schedule – less of a leisure activity and more as a necessity to reaching the goals set.

A daily set-aside time for self-care rituals such as self-massage can help you to balance out the task-oriented energy. Pranayama, or breathing techniques, are beneficial for you as Saturn is a Vayu (air element) planet. Pranayama is one of the most effective remedies to deal with the Saturnian energy. Before sleep you can do a relaxing Pranayama like Nadi Shodhana – Alternate Nostril Breathing. And if you catch yourself working from morning to night, ensure you take some time out in the evenings to relax and wind down. Listen to some gentle music or do something creative. And remember, everything doesn’t have to be 100% perfect ALL the time.

Moon in Aquarius

Unconventional Aquarius Moon may think a little differently to others as they work to bring people together and organize the world according to their ideals. Engrossed in service to others, and driven by ruler Saturn’s responsible, disciplined energy, make sure you take care of yourself as well as others, and take some time out from the constant work. Prone to worry, you may find it challenging to sleep at times.

Each day, lift your spirits by taking a little time to adventure, dance or play a little. And meditate to conserve your own energy, which in turn will help you to sleep better, and serve better.

Having a warm shower in the evening can help you to cleanse your body and mind in preparation for a good night’s sleep. In particular, the feet are connected with the 12th house, so washing and drying your feet and massaging them gently with almond oil is a great way to ease you into rest mode.

Personalized Sleep Rituals

We have also recently added some personalized Sleep Rituals you can do into the align27 app. You’ll find them in the rituals section or you can tap the button below to go straight there.

Of course, there are also some general sleep rituals that can benefit anyone, regardless of their birth chart. Here are a few to get you started:

  1. Never sleep with your feet pointing towards the South – South is the direction connected to Lord Yama, the God of Death. Therefore, it is considered inauspicious to sleep with your feet pointing towards the South, as it is believed to bring bad luck or negative energy.

The human body has a natural magnetic field, and sleeping with your head towards the North could disrupt the body’s magnetic field, causing health problems.

The best directions for the feet are East, West, North and North East.

  2. Make the sound (Bija Mantra), ‘Haum’ (pronounced ‘HowMmmm’). Take a long deep breath in and make the sound on the out breath.

A bija mantra is a one-syllable sound that is believed to have a powerful spiritual or energetic effect when chanted.

The word ‘bija’ means ‘seed’ in Sanskrit, and these mantras are considered to be the seeds of divine energy or consciousness.

  3. If you suffer from chronic sleep disorders or insomnia, then donate a bed, bedside table, bedsheet, bedcover, cushions or anything used for sleeping to people who are less fortunate than you.

  4. If you suffer from chronic sleep disorders or insomnia, then donate a bed, bedside table, bedsheet, bedcover, cushions or anything used for sleeping to people who are less fortunate than you.

  5. Keep some drinking water near your bed while sleeping.

  6. Meditate –  Spend some time in solitude and practice meditation, which is strongly connected to the 12th house of sleep.

  7. Look or gaze at an image of Lord Vishnu (The Maintainer) sleeping on a serpent and chant the mantra, ‘Om Padmanābhaya Namah,’ a few times after you lie in your bed.

  8. Chant the mantra, ‘Om Namo Narayana,’ 3 times before you close your eyes and fall asleep. Let this be the last mantra that you chant before your eyes close.
